In this video I'm talkin cool about Musker and Clements' way-back sleeper hit from the early 2000's, Treasure Planet. If there's anything I love more than Disney films it's Disney films most of my friends haven't heard of. Patreon: Article:

heck yeaaaaaah this was awesome. a) i love Treasure Planet so much. b) my senior seminar was a Pixar class and let me tell you, i know waaay more about the business ins and outs of Disney than i ever wanted to know- and i think your conclusion is spot on tbh. c) This was just really well done. I didn't mean to watch the whole thing cause I didn't really have time, but I got so absorbed I finished it anyways. Anywho i'm glad i found your channel. Keep it up!

Just want to say, this movie was hands-down my favorite Disney animated film of all time, just ahead of Atlantis: The Lost Empire. The music, the characters, the art, and how it all came together, were leagues ahead of everything else that came out that year. In my opinion even Harry Potter failed by comparison. I hope that Disney didn't in fact set out to kill this project. If they did, then as you said in the video, they actually killed what could have been a new generation of classic 2-d animation films. The kind of films that I would one day show my own children. This sort of animation approach applied to other classics would have also been fantastic to see. I know I'm rambling at this point, and i'm sorry about that, I just wanted to get all this out there. Fair winds and following seas, fellow spacers.

Great analysis of a great animated masterpiece. Just one thing: The historical aesthetic being referenced in the film is the GEORGIAN period. Not Victorian. Your confusion is perhaps understandable because Robert Louis Stevenson himself was a Victorian, but he set his high-seas adventure novel back a generation or two earlier, during the reign of King George III - in a nostalgic era that was already long-gone by the time Stevenson was writing. I guess it's not a crime to lump every historical era together under the category of "old timey sh*t" but every time you said "Victorian" it made me cringe. Because I'm a nerd. It's not really important; I just felt like I had to say it & get it off my chest.

That was a very good movie. I still love it, and enjoy breaking it out whenever the mood strikes me. 3D was awesome when it wasn't ALL OVER THE PLACE. And it was awesome being included into realistic or drawn scenes such as shown here. Recent movies visually bore me to death. And I hated to see 2D-animation die... I refused to watch any 3D-Disney-Pixar-movie in theater 'cause I don't want to pay money and tribute to that trend I for myself disgrace so much. When being a kid I always wanted to become a Disney animator 'cause I loved the movies for their awesome details and backgrounds and character design. I took art classes and did my exams in arts. That was in 2000/2001. The years they buried 2D under a tombstone of "It costs too much money"-excuses. Now I don't even bother to do anything artistic as a profession but became a teacher (what most frustrated people do - lol). "Treasure Planet" is an awesome movie. It's one of the less Disney-DVDs I kept apart from "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (which was totally underrated, too - the animation is f***ing brilliant) and "Beauty and the Beast". Those movies still entertain me after years.

This is such a great analysis of this film. I love this movie so much and I agree it's one of Disney's best I think the robot is there because the target audience is kids. I watched this movie as a kid with my cousins and we all loved the robot. It was a major attraction to the movie. I think they struck a good balance between making it fun for kids but also something adults can enjoy. Also I believe your tinfoil hat theory. People are that petty. They are.

This is unquestionably my favorite Disney movie, partly because Jim's past spoke to me a bit too much, but sales don't hinder that love. It has flaws, I don't deny them, or try to cover them up, but this will remain a masterpiece in my eyes forever. Too bad Disney didn't get the memo.

as a kid one of the big reasons why I loved this movie so much was because I related so much to Jim, since my dad was a deadbeat and left when I was pretty young. but as I’ve grown older, I’ve really started to appreciate the animation of this movie, its design, the score; you can really tell this was such a passion project for Musker and Clements, its just a shame that it’s either unheard of by a lot of people or not appreciated for what it is.

Blue Monkey

This is hands down my favourite film as a child. That transition sequence of young Jim instantly growing up and riding his surfer, the roaring orchestral score gaining momentum with more visual stimulus than I'd ever seen in any movie at the time. That scene sent my mind racing for years after it came out and still get giddy with excitement every time I hear it. So few people I know have actually seen this film which is incredibly sad. It's one of those films where I can't work out if I should tell someone to watch it out of it being a good movie or if it's the nostalgia of younger years warping my view. As upset as I am that this movie flopped monetarily, I'm glad it was made in the first place. Have a question for you, in your research did you find any reasoning why there were pushing a summer blockbuster movie near the end of the year? Would it of been crazy to hold onto all the assets and push it for release right as the summer holidays were coming around next year? Oh and also, how come you're hiding your subscriber count? Maybe I'm wrong here but if you have a 'low' subscriber count pumping out content of this quality; people love to see an underdog succeed. Just throwing that out there :) It's rare I right a comment like this but you've put too much into this video for it to get just a "cool". Subscribed and can't wait to see what other topics you have to talk about in the future!

I not gonna lie.....the last few lines of this video make me shed a tear, first fantastic analysis in such UNDERRATED master work, Treasure Planet was so different and amazing when I see it that I even didn't believe was a Disney animated film, in how different and fresh it was, I love this film and its so sad to hear the tragic story behind it, after all the effort and work and TIME Ron and John put into make this all for just burn and fail, its really sad, specially after hear the way it was release, no wonder why it fail to get money, even sadder for me, I hate the first Harry Potter film, so know that that film in a way was responsible and kill any chance also to get a Treasure Planet sequel, just make me hate more that film. Anyway amazing video.

Silent Witness
Silent Witness

I've not seen it in a while, but I remember Treasure Planet being pretty awesome myself... The "refined steam punk" look where they combined Victorian era and future space technologies may not be realistic, but it is a pretty good unique look to it all... The trailer that was played to advertise the movie sucked quality wise in comparison to the movie itself, so when you say that Disney sabataged it's own product just because who ever was in charge at the time had no faith in it what so ever and wanted to go in a different route instead, I completely agree with that... Disney doesn't really care about the art being done or the stories... They only want the money they rake in with as little money going towards the projects as possible... More money towards the projects = less money in their pockets and the more money they need to earn/pay back... You can make one hell of a story that's realistic and touches on a lot of relatable topics and have a lot of relatable characters, but if there's no money coming from it, then Disney and other places as well will just sweep it under the rug and forget about it... You know Disney is becoming a Monopoly, right? If it isn't already? Aren't those supposed to be illegal? A single company can't go buying up everything under the sun and owning it all, drowning out any sort of competition against it or what ever? Disney will always take the money over the story... Not realizing that short changing the story on money only ends up backfiring on you not making money... Invest fully into tour stories, and you'll make the money you want and are looking for... Short change them on the money they need to succeed, and you lose out on the money altogether... Disney and others like them will never learn this... I wonder what the world will be like when Disney finally goes bankrupt one day? Someone should do a video on that...
